Oscar tried to keep in good spirits as he trudged through the dense woods. It was overcast today and he had woken up to Lumoroske giving one of his delightful "epiphanies" in some thick-skulled sermon. He was even further disappointed to find that he and David had been assigned to go and get some fresh water for the day's trip. That is, he was made to spend yet more time with the man to whom he could never confess his love. Well, he wasn't assigned, he admitted to himself, as he more or less leapt at the opportunity to be alone at David's side gathering water seeing the great, muscular perfection that was David be reflected by the cool, pure waters of the spring
"Oscar, would you please get your head in gear? Staring at me isn't helping us get water and it's making me uncomfortable." David said with a look of barely hidden irritation. It seemed that even he was irritated from the morning's drivvel.
"Oh, David, I'm only thinking on how lovely the sky is and still taking in the walking miracle that is you!" Oscar started to feel in a good mood to tease David. "You know, being a spirit made flesh, you really are the very picture of masculine beauty. Why, you might even rival me in looks, you handsome man, you!"
He smiled as he watched the other man fight down a blush in order to keep his composure. "That's
lovely. But" David began to reply before Oscar cut him off.
"But what? Can't I just admire your looks? I'm a poet! You should be flattered that I consider you to be inspiration to make ballads that will make women across countries swoon!" He said a hair more harshly than he intended. He had to be careful lest he say something like that again! He felt as if he had just as well as told David outright how attractive he found him.
David was silent was silent for a moment until at last he said, "Well, I'm not sure why you would want to sing about me when they're already looking at such a fine, debonair man as yourself. Besides, we need to focus on water right now."
Oscar felt his cheeks go hot with David's compliment, even if it was off hand. If only he knew how those words made him feel
and if only his words could make David feel the same. Deciding to drop the topic (for now), he began singing softly to himself and think on Lumo's words in hopes he could distract himself with irritation rather than get swept away in thoughts of his forbidden crush.
